What’s the Difference Between Cruelty-Free and Vegan?

Cruelty-free and vegan are two skincare terms that often go hand in hand. After all, at the core of both is a love and respect for our furry friends. Each represents and advocates for the protection of animals and their rights. But, even with this similarity at heart, cruelty-free and vegan are very different from one another. Learn more about these terms and what sets them apart below:

What is cruelty-free skincare?

When you hear the words cruelty-free used within the skincare industry, it means that the product, and its ingredients, weren’t tested on animals. Cruelty-free is focused more on the production of the product, rather than the product itself. There are no standard definitions currently set forth by the FDA for it. However, cruelty free skin care has become mandatory in order to comply with all EU cosmetic regulations.

What is vegan skincare?

A skincare product is vegan when it doesn’t have any animal-derived ingredients or by-products in it. As opposed to cruelty-free, which is geared towards the production of the product, veganism is all about the product itself. Honey, beeswax, gelatin, squalene and lanoline are just some of the common skincare ingredients that aren’t typically vegan.

But, since we’re a vegan brand, we offer vegan alternatives to many popular animal-derived skincare ingredients like probiotics, glycerin, lecithin and niacinamide — to name a few. Get more information on our vegan alternatives here.

Can a skincare product be cruelty-free but not vegan?

Yes! When it comes to cruelty-free and vegan skincare, one does not equal the other. If a product is cruelty-free but not vegan, it implies that this item was not tested on animals, but does contain animal by-products in its formula.

Can a skincare product be vegan but not cruelty-free?

Yes! In this case, the product was formulated without any animal by-products, but sadly the product or its ingredients were tested on animals during production.

Can a skincare product be both cruelty-free and vegan?

Yes! With these situations, the product was not tested on animals during any stage of its development AND the product’s formula does not have any animal by-products in it. We fall into this category here at glowoasis. We’re a cruelty-free and vegan skincare brand.

How can you tell if a brand is cruelty-free and/or vegan?

Just keep an eye out for certifications from respected organizations that are well-known for their work and advocacy of these causes. For example, we’re certified by PETA and registered with The Vegan Society. Our brand has undergone strict assessments and met the highest standards to achieve both these certifications. You can now find their logos on our website and product packaging.

Now that you know what makes a skincare brand cruelty-free and vegan, we’re extremely proud to say we’re both. Here at glowoasis, we’ve made a commitment to be cruelty-free and vegan. And, we pledge to ALWAYS remain that way.
